A new coffee table...

My $30.00 coffee table! This is the “before” pic:

I really liked the size of the table, and I liked the chunky, turned legs. Once I removed those funky metal tacks, sanded and filled the holes and sanded again, it was looking better. I taped off the top of the table in preparation for stripping/restaining, and primed the legs and the edges with Zissner Bin.

BIG disappointment: after I’d stripped the top and sanded lightly, I discovered it was made of veneered pressboard. So, rather than staining the top, I knew I'd have to paint the whole table. Okay, so here's the first try…used Cottage White and Coventry Grey paints…glazed and covered with Polycrylic...Coventry Gray paint seems to be popular on some decor blogs...but I HATED it!! Have you ever done a piece with visions of beauty in your head, and it just didn't turn out the way you expected? I left it this way for a week, thinking..."oh maybe it'll grow on me." Well, it did...like a bad fungus! ACK!

Okay, plan # 3: after gnashing of teeth and and stomping of feet, I pick myself up, dust myself off, and MOVE ON! Strip, sand, repaint! I sanded lightly, re-primed, repainted the entire table with Rustoleum Painters Touch Heirloom White Spray Paint, glazed with Benjamin Moore Aqua Glaze mixed with a tablespoon of black flat paint, applied with a chip brush, rubbed off…and I LOVE it now!! I applied a coat of Minwax Paste Finishing Wax (clear) to the top and buffed it. I'll let the paint cure for a week or so, then give it some chippy goodness with my mouse sander. Here are the finished pics so far:

I love it now! I love it

Did I say I REEEEALY love it!? Thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to stop by. I'm new to the decor blog world, and it feels like Christmas whenever I see a new comment...like a little present! 3. Awesome job! I agree, the pure white looks soooo much better than the white and gray! Shame it resulted in extra work, but at least you're happy with the results - and I'm very jealous!

  19. I run into these types of hiccups more often than I'd care to admit. Although it's really frustrating to re-do, you have to do what makes you happy in the end. I love it and glad you have found the perfect fit. : )
